England travel to Belarus on Wednesday night for the latest World Cup Qualifier but is it really correct to write them off as just another team of minnows? BetUK has taken a typically patriotic line on the game, going 1/3 on England and a huge 8/1 on the hosts (with 16/5 the draw).
Granted, they are ranked 59th in the world (below the likes of Honduras, Saudi Arabia & Congo) but coach Bernd Stange has turned them into a side capable of beating anyone on their day. Euro 2008 qualifying saw them defeat Holland 2-1 at home in a famous night for Belarusian football. And since then they have recorded sensational friendly results in drawing with Argentina (0-0 at home), Finland (2-2 away), Germany (2-2 away) and Turkey (2-2 home) before World Cup qualifying. They were unlucky to concede a controversial last minute penalty to go down 1-0 in the Ukraine (which is proving a very tough place to go) and beat 184th ranked Andorra 3-1 away in their other group game to date.
The whole nation has been buoyed by the fortunes of BATE Borisov, who became the first Belarusian side to reach the group stages of the Champions League this season, and the attacking philosophy of the former Iraqi coach has taken superior sides by surprise in recent months (as demonstrated by their results). So clearly, if England are not on their game then the hosts are capable of at least denying the favourites all three points on Wednesday. Betting the draw could be the value play here.
