What, Stoke in the Premiership?

Amazingly, Stoke are back in England’s Premiership for the first time in 23 years and some bookmakers have already priced them up at 9/4 to stay in the top flight next year. This is of very little interest from a betting point of view as it’s so difficult for a poorly funded club like Stoke to compete at the highest level.

In fact, unless they get bought by a Russian oligarch or a US businessman before the start of the next season in August I would leave this bet alone and take a price instead on them being relegated straight back into the Championship again.

One bookmaker has even gone 7/1 about Stoke claiming a Top 10 finish next season and again bettors should certainly swerve this bet as the so-called Potters have about as much chance of achieving that as Gary Lineker has of getting the FIFA world player of the year award next year!

As to who else apart from Stoke and West Brom will be promoted to the Premiership next season we will have to wait and see what happens in the play-offs. There is some cracking betting action to be had on the play-offs and personally I think Crystal Palace is the team to be with at around 7/4. They make more appeal than Bristol City, Watford or Hull but we’ll cover the play-offs in greater depth in a forthcoming blog before they start on Saturday, 10 May.
